Pilates – Mat Workout – Pilates Mat based exercises can help develop flexibility, strength, endurance and posture. It’s your body working against gravity that provides the biggest challenge.
The mat workout is the most basic element of the Pilates system, however, it is the foundation upon which all else rests. The body provides its own resistance without the aid of springs, pulleys and levers, working against gravity to build strength and develop flexibility. The lack of hardware also means a lack of support making the floor exercises the most challenging.
Just when you thought it was challenging enough, your instructor may offer a variation of equipment that can challenge the body further or in some circumstances equipment is used to aid support.
Pilates is a fitness method that is suitable for all fitness levels and ages, beginners to advanced helping you to:
Improve muscle strength & endurance Help with posture correction
Improve flexibility Relieve stress
Improve coordination and balance Develop a stronger core & pelvic floor
Reformers – Joseph Pilates never intended either Mat work or Reformers to stand alone. His approach was integrative, combining mat and machine for the best all round programme, providing the full benefits that Pilates can offer.
The reformer exercises are performed laying, sitting, kneeling or standing and the resistance can be adjusted to assist or challenge you in your routine targeting the ‘core’ and improving postural alignment. The springs provide adjustable resistance to the muscles whilst minimising stress on tendons and ligaments.
Many people find that in Mat work, where you are your own resistance, you sometimes just can’t do an exercise, or even get down on the floor to start off with, but with the Reformer, you can easily and safely do so.
The Reformer works to lengthen whilst strengthening the muscles rather than building bulk. It therefore makes for an effective, non-impact stretching and toning programme that is safe for the joints and favoured by Physiotherapists and Osteopaths.
